dc.descriptionSpeaker(s): Karen Kohler Assistant Professor of Curriculum & Instruction, Texas A&M University - San Antonio Karen Kohler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. She was the former founder and executive director of early childhood literacy programs that focused on professional development for pre-kindergarten and Head Start educators and families in Texas and California. Dr. Kohler started her career as an elementary school teacher and later a family specialist. She serves on the board of directors for the Learning Disabilities Association of Texas and is passionate about educating families on how to be engaged in their children's education process. She holds a Master's in Education with an emphasis in Elementary Education and a Doctorate in Education, specializing in Reading and Literacy. Her research interests include family engagement, collaboration between classroom teachers and special programs, teacher preparation, and literacy. Pamela Millsap Vice President for Academic Affairs, Lamar State College - Port Arthur Dr. Pamela Millsap assumed the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) in March 2018, having previously served as Vice President at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas and College of the Mainland in Texas City, Texas. Dr. Millsap has a long history of working with disadvantaged populations, first as a clinical psychologist and then as a faculty member and administrator in higher education. Dr. Millsap has made many presentations at state and national conferences on topics related to closing the achievement gaps among student groups, student success, instructional assessment, and institutional effectiveness, with a central focus on the development of college processes to support student retention and completion rates. She fervently believes that education is the pathway to opportunity, and she is passionate about ensuring access to higher education for all. Dr. Millsap earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Houston and her Master of Science degree and her Doctor of Philosophy degree in clinical psychology at Vanderbilt University. She is licensed in the state of Texas as a clinical psychologist. dc.description.abstractThis presentation follows an academic librarian/faculty member partnership, formed with the original intent to instruct teacher candidates about copyright restrictions in education, as it transformed into a project involving development of online materials to familiarize pre-service teachers with the availability of openly licensed digital instructional content and to introduce them to selection and usage processes. Multiple iterations of an online tutorial paired with facilitated instruction, a grant-funded OER module creation effort, a forced shift to 100% online instruction due to COVID-19, and a research project involving education program students, all played roles in this metamorphosis. By the conference dates, the presenters will have preliminary data to share from their study of pre-service teachers' awareness of, and attitudes toward, openly licensed content for instructional uses in the classroom. Additionally, session attendees will leave with a list of resources on OER use in P-12 education and in teacher education programs.en_US
