Item A guide to design and production for the video centric performance(2013-05) Gazzillo, Eric; Otte, CharlesAs modern technologies increase the capabilities of today’s stage, performances have grown to incorporate the use of video as a means to transform the stage in a way never seen before. Digital tools have unlocked designer’s ability to modify space and time in at the actual speed of light. While analogue film projections have been used on the stage for a number of years, it is the advent of digital video that has allowed performance art to develop a new interaction with a virtual world. I intend to explore and document the process behind a video centric performance. In this instance, I define video centric performance as an event in which the action on stage relies on the video content in some way to create a complete performance. Through this thesis I will focus on how the evolving definition of video has created particular workflows and methodologies to help adapt digital video techniques for the stage. Using several case studies, my workflows and methodologies will be developed and formed into a single written document. My written document is meant to be an all-encompassing guide. The goal in writing such a text is to provide single source education for artists looking to grow their understanding of video centric performances. Video production as well as stage production is a nuanced art, which can require years of practice to fully understand. Young artist may use higher education to grow their skills, or experienced professionals may use reading as a means of professional development. In both of these instances, members of the entertainment community are limited by the availability of a single source to bridge the gap between existing educational resources. Throughout the document, I avoid expanding on detailed topics that are covered by other professions, instead opting for an approach that weaves together the skills of performance artists, designers, technicians, cinematographers and animators in a way that focuses these talents towards the stage.Item The Lil' Bastard's guide to love : how to rub one out in your crush's bathroom and destroy the evidence(2010-05) Shasteen, Stephanie Elaine; English; Kroll, Judith, 1943-; Young, DeanThe Lil’ Bastard’s Guide to Love is a compilation of poems I have written during two years of study in the creative writing program at the University of Texas. These poems mostly concern themselves with love. They also deal with the inadequacies of naming and language, and coming to terms with the fact that sometimes the best thing you can do is to not ruin everything with words. Words will disappoint you sometimes, but they are necessary, so at least try to be square with people if you absolutely must say something. As George Carlin put it, “You can't be afraid of words that speak the truth. I don't like words that hide the truth. I don't like words that conceal reality. I don't like euphemisms or euphemistic language. And American English is loaded with euphemisms.”Item Preoperative counseling for the laryngectomee : a clinician's guide(2010-05) Adams, Megan Rhodes; Byrd, Courtney T.; Hampton, ElizabethResearch shows that an important component to successful adjustment and improved quality of life following a laryngectomy is comprehensive preoperative counseling. However, evidence indicates that preoperative counseling in its current form is inadequate. Additionally, due to a small percentage of speech language pathologists having clinical experience working with this population, SLPs may be unsure of what to include in counseling sessions if presented with a laryngectomee. This report serves as a guide to assist SLPs in preoperative counseling sessions. It contains information regarding laryngeal cancer, treatment options, alaryngeal speech options, and additional postoperative considerations to include in preoperative counseling. Illustrations and tables are included within the report so that the practicing clinician has access to user-friendly information to provide to his or her patients. By spending extra time consulting with the patient and his or her family during the preoperative sessions, the SLP can make a vast difference in the patient’s overall quality of life after surgery.
