dc.description.abstract"Behind the Pine Curtain" is a common term that has come to identify the region known as Deep East Texas. The purpose in writing this dissertation is to provide the first documentation of development of community theatres in this region. Chapter I establishes this purpose, outlines the author's method of gathering information on community theatres in the area, and provides a general description of Deep East Texas. In Chapter II, the author provides a background of community theatre in the area, identifies each current community theatre in the region, and provides each current community theatre organization's focus and history. Chapter III concludes with evaluations, predictions, and recommendations regarding each current community theatre.
