El príncipe perseguido is a theatrical piece written ca. 1645 by Luis de Belmonte Bermúdez, Agustín de Moreto y Cabana and Antonio Martínez de Meneses. These three authors based their work on a plot originally conceived by Lope de Vega {El Gran Duque de Moscovia). The plot by the Fénix focused on contemporary Russian history and dealt with love, deceit, and tyranny. Though maintaining the main important elements of El Gran Duque de Moscovia, the three authors added paramount new characteristics to the previous work. El príncipe perseguido analyzes the intricacies of politics and tyranny and presents the struggle of Juan Basilio, the main character, to achieve control of his people and self-control and knowledge of himself In doing so, the three authors were also influenced by La vida es sueño by Calderón de la Barca. A preliminary study dealing in detail with El príncipe perseguido's main elements (sources, metrics, meaning, etc.) is followed by a modernized edition of the work. The edition is accompanied by a fully annotated apparatus which explains several obscure aspects of the text.
