Abstract

Since it was shown that potassium hexachlororhenate (IV) probably did not undergo ammonolysis in liquid ammonia(2), but that potassium hexabromorhenate(IV) did ammonolize(3)5 the reaction, if any, of potassium hexaiodorhenate (IV) with liquid ammonia would be of interest in understanding the reaction trends for the set of compounds K2ReX^ (where X = Cl, Br, or I) in liquid ammonia. In the event that potassium hexaiodorhenate(IV) proved to be stable in liquid ammonia as is the chloride, it would be a suitable starting material for reduction studies in liquid ammonia such as are reported for the chloride(2). In the event that potassium hexaiodorhenate(IV) was found to undergo ammonolysis, potentiometric titrations with potassium amide in liquid ammonia, and characterization of insoluble species produced would be of interest. Therefore, the investigation of the reaction of KpReIr with liquid ammonia is part of this thesis problem.
