Three areas of geologic literature contribute to an understanding of the Mescalero Sandhills. The dunes were first approached from basic morphology. To understand the stratigraphy of the Sandhills; however, it was also necessary to deal with soils and soil stratigraphy. Lastly, to place the first two in perspective, the morphology and stratigraphy were compared with similar dune areas on the Llano Estacado.
