The purpose of this Burn Treatment and Research Center will be to provide a specialized burn care facility, located in Lubbock, Texas, that will meet the growing needs of the West Texas area. It will do this by both providing specialized care for the burn victim and by providing an environment suitable for teaching the complexities of burn care. Many burns are being treated in general and community hospitals without burn programs and, possibly burn expertise. While some burns (of the hands, for example) may not involve a large body surface area, the management of the injury may mean the difference between a functioning, contributing member of society and a less functional individual. Current literature supports the belief that the best burn care is given in facilities where such care is organized and formalized and where the staff at all levels are experienced, interested and committed.
