Abstract

The concept of coaxial correlation techniques in hydrology seems to indicate the possible application of a nonlinear, least squares approach to predict the relation between precipitation and subsequent basin recharge. The digital computer, in conjunction with numerical optimization techniques, should allow the investigation of large quantities of data and possible determination of the desired empirical relations.

This report investigates the application of these techniques and procedures to a collection of data gathered on watersheds within the conterminous United States. It was found that the techniques are feasible and the response surface is characterized by many irregularities and local optimum solutions.
