Abstract

In this thesis we have discussed about the air interface for LTE. We have shown the extensive details of the two different types of access that is downlink access- Orthogonal frequency multiple access (OFDMA) and uplink access- Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA).We started with basic concepts about these techniques and proceeded ahead by discussing the operation and design of both types of methods. Also we have shown the transmission chain for downlink and uplink showing step by step that how the data and control information are transmitted over air in LTE. We have presented a brief overview of the link budget for DL and UL in LTE. Furthermore we have discussed about the physical layer procedure like cell search, timing advance, and HARQ and power control in detail to build a solid understanding. We have analyzed various smart antenna technologies in detail and discussed when and where each of these methods may be useful depending on many factors like channel condition, traffic load, cell center users or cell edge users. Also, we observed that dynamic switching between some MIMO techniques can be useful depending upon the various conditions. Finally we presented some of the real world implementation or simulations based on real world scenario and discussed the results.
