Item A Geographical Approach to Tracking Escherichia coli and Nutrients in a Texas Coastal Plains Watershed(2011-02-22) Harclerode, CaraCarters Creek in Brazos County, Texas, like many surface water reaches in the Texas Gulf Coast region, has been identified for bacteria and nutrient impairment on the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) 303(d) List. Carters Creek drains a rapidly urbanizing watershed and has been found to carry high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrate, phosphate and sodium. These constituents have a severe impact on the creek?s capacity for healthy aquatic life and increase the potential for eutrophication downstream. The creek has also had chronic high Escherichia coli counts, making the creek unsuitable for contact recreation according to the accepted standard for surface water quality, which is a geometric mean of 126 CFU per 100 ml. In this study, grab samples were taken twice monthly from fifteen sites on Carters Creek and its subcatchments from July 2007 to June 2008. The samples were analyzed for E. coli, DOC, total N, NO3-N, NH4-N, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, F-, Cl-, Br-, NO2-, SO42- and PO4-3. Mean annual DOC concentrations varied from 24.8 mg/L in Carter at Boonville Road to 55.5 mg/L in Wolfpen Creek; sodium varied from 33 mg/L in Carter at Old Reliance Road to 200 mg/L, also in Wolfpen Creek. Burton 4, the subcatchment with the highest geometric mean for E. coli with 2547 CFU/100 mL, was also sampled with greater geographical intensity for E. coli and optical brightener fluorescence at 445 nm to identify any leaking sewer pipes, but no evidence of defective pipes was found. During both the spring season and annual high flow (storm events), E. coli counts were positively correlated with total urban land use, probably caused by storm runoff carrying residues from impervious surfaces into the stream. High flow E. coli also had a negative relationship with potassium and a positive relationship with calcium, possibly suggesting a bioflocculation effect. Sites downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) showed higher nitrate, phosphate, sodium, potassium, chloride and fluoride than other urban subcatchments. Creeks with golf courses carried more phosphate, sodium and fluoride than subcatchments without golf courses or WWTPs.Item Abundance and Distribution of Africanized Honey Bees in an Urban Environments(2013-01-18) Chen, Szu-HungAfricanized honey bees (AHB) are a hybrid between African and European honey bees (EHB). Compared to the EHB, AHB exhibit more intense, defensive behaviors but nevertheless provide the same important ecosystem service--pollination. AHB have been found in Tucson, AZ. since 1993. It is important to understand the population ecology of AHB for several reasons. Most directly, the behavioral traits retained from African bees present public safety and health risk. AHB are easily agitated; even slight disturbances (e.g., human movements) can provoke attacks. Several hybridized bee traits (e.g., higher colony growth rates, reproduction at a smaller colony size, nesting in a wider range of cavity materials, etc.) also make them more adapted to urban landscapes. The overlap of habitats and resource-using of AHB with human significantly raise the risk of stinging incidents, especially in the areas of bee aggregation. Although the presence of AHB in urban environments may present a public safety and health risk, they do contribute to urban ecosystems substantially through pollination. The fact that AHB is a part of the urban ecosystem suggests a need for a better understanding of the relationship among climate factors, urban landscape characteristics, and AHB population dynamics. The goal of my dissertation was to understand population dynamics of AHB in urban environments using removal records of AHB colonies in water meter boxes. I have demonstrated useful methods and repeatable procedures to process, extract, and synthesize water meter box data which were not collected or sampled specifically for any ecological research. I also examined the spatio-temporal distributions of AHB colony removals in water meter boxes, and evaluated the effects of variations of temperature and precipitation on observed patterns. Then, I investigated the linkage between spatial patterns of AHB colonies and urban landscape characteristics by evaluating densities of water meter boxes, AHB colony abundance, and colony occupancy among different land cover/land use types. Lastly, a conceptual model and quantitative models were developed to illustrate AHB population dynamics, particularly and the interactions among water meter boxes, alternative cavities, and honey bee colonies. Overall, the probabilities of AHB colonies selecting nesting sites can be influenced by: (1) the ratio of water meter boxes and alternative cavities; (2) the difference of vegetative attributes among locations associated with the preference of AHB in selecting new nesting sites. Seasonal variations of precipitation and temperature can affect the development and productivity of AHB population.Item American Progressive Education, Texas Schools, and Home Economics, 1910-1957(2011-08-08) Besa, DelilahThis thesis explores the Americanization efforts of educational leaders in Texas during the Progressive Era to demonstrate that reformers did not use vocational education, and specifically home economics, primarily to Americanize immigrant and ethnic minority students to become good, working-poor citizens. Through Americanization efforts in vocational curricula, reformers hoped to provide economically disadvantaged students with a practical body of knowledge and democratic values that would create healthy, economically viable communities occupied by loyal, educated American citizens. Federal legislation that promoted the development of vocational education in the first half of the twentieth century demonstrates that this way of thinking reflected national rather than regional trends. In Texas, vocational education was largely directed at a population that was predominately white and rural for the first several decades of the twentieth century. That decision by educators casts considerable doubt on assertions that they were primarily motivated by racialized thinking. Notably, home economics curricula was constructed over the framework of Americanization, and children who took such courses in rural schools received training that advocated respect for others, cooperation, an appreciation of Western culture and the value of aesthetics, efficiency and thriftiness, and good hygiene practices. The homemaking program at the South San Antonio high school in the 1944-1945 school year provides an example. Homemaking teacher Nell Kruger's curriculum reached far beyond training future housewives, waitresses and maids. She sought, in accordance with the state-mandated home economics curriculum, to provide a practical body of knowledge and to inculcate democratic values in her students. Using Texas' State Department of Education and State Board of Vocational Education bulletins, Texas Education Agency literature, federal and state laws, conference reports, and curriculum guidelines, this thesis seeks to further nuance the understanding of Americanization efforts through vocational education, specifically homemaking, during the Progressive Era in Texas by arguing that Americanization reflected an urban, middle-class perspective directed toward economically disadvantaged white students as well as immigrant and ethnic minority students.Item Effects of Habitat Characteristics on Occupancy and Productivity of a Forest-Dependent Songbird in an Urban Landscape(2013-04-24) Robinson, Dianne HaliHabitat fragmentation and isolation can result in decreased occupancy and reproductive success within songbirds, particularly for species inhabiting urban environments where suitable habitat may be limited. The golden-cheeked warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) is a federally endangered songbird that inhabits oak-juniper (Quercus spp.- Juniperus spp.) across central Texas. Past research on this warbler has indicated decreased patch occupancy near urban areas and negative reproductive effects associated with decreased distance to edge and decreased canopy cover. A rural study indicated warblers occupy patches ?3 ha, and warblers in patches ?20 ha are more likely to successfully fledge young. There are no thresholds yet identified for this warbler within urban environments, where effects of habitat fragmentation on reproductive success are more pronounced than within rural environments. I monitored patch occupancy, territory establishment, pairing success, and fledging success of warblers in an urban environment. I determined minimum patch-size thresholds for productivity measurements, and also monitored effects on productivity from canopy cover, woodland composition, distance to and size of the nearest habitat patch, and distance to the nearest habitat patch >100 ha. I compared my results to those from a similar study conducted in a rural system. I compared territory size and territory density between an urban and rural system. Warblers occupied 24% (n = 63) patches surveyed; the smallest patch occupied was 3.5 ha. The smallest patch with an established territory was 10.7 ha, and 10% (n = 63) of habitat patches had at least one established territory. Warblers successfully fledged young in 3 patches, the smallest of which was 26.5 ha. I found patch-size was predictive for territory establishment and pairing success with warblers requiring 13 ha (95% CI: 10.0 ? 16.8 ha) and 19 ha (95% CI: 15.7 ? 22.6 ha) habitat patches, respectively. I found a minimum threshold of approximately 66% canopy cover (95% CI: 65.2 ? 66.4%) required for patch occupancy, and found no warblers established a territory in a habitat patch >25 m from the next nearest patch. I found higher minimum thresholds within an urban system for territory establishment and pairing success than those seen within a rural system. I suggest preserving warbler habitat patches >22 ha that are in close proximity to other habitat patches. This will help to enhance warbler habitat within urban areas and maintain reproductively viable habitat patches, while not halting development completely.Item Globalization and the Texas metropolises: competition and complementarity in the Texas Urban Triangle(2009-05-15) Gavinha, Jose Antonio dos ReisThis dissertation examines relationships between cities, and more specifically the largest Texas cities, and the global economy. Data on headquarters location and corporation sales over a 20-year period (1984-2004) supported the hypothesis that globalization is not homogeneous, regular or unidirectional, but actually showed contrasted phases. Texas cities have been raising in global rankings, due to corporate relocations and, to lesser extent, the growth of local activities. By year 2004, Dallas and Houston ranked among the top-20 headquarters cities measured by corporation sales The Texas Urban Triangle had one of the major global concentrations of oil- and computer-related corporation headquarters; conversely, key sectors like banking, insurance and automotive were not significant. Standardized employment data in major U.S. metropolitan areas was examined through principal components analyses. Overall, larger places showed higher degrees of diversity, and no trend toward economic convergence. The TUT also presented a degree of intra-regional diversity comparable to other urban regions. Findings confirmed the relevance of oil- and information-related activities, along with construction, and weakness of activities linked to finance and corporate management. Traffic and air linkages in Texas cities were contrasted to other American gateways. Dallas and Houston have been major nodes in global air transportation, with very important roles as transit hubs for domestic (the former) and short international (the latter) flights. For long-haul international traffic both cities were second-level American gateways, with Houston mobilizing better connected to Western Europe and Mesoamerica, and Dallas to South America and East Asia. Dallas central location strengthened its role in the domestic market, as the center of one of the five major subsystems in the country and a top gateway in enplanements, number of linkages and connectivity measures. The Texas air travel network hierarchical organization was relatively unbalanced, with two strong nodes at the top, three little-relevant middle nodes, and several very poorly interconnected gateways at the bottom. Finally, the high supply of regional flights between primary destinations, namely Dallas and Houston, resulted in significant effects of time-space convergence. Such effects were only found between highly-connected major gateways, and completely bypassed other places, independently of their size and relative location.Item Nesting ecology of mourning doves in changing urban landscapes(Texas A&M University, 2005-02-17) Munoz, Anna MariaTexas A&M University (TAMU) supports a substantial breeding population of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) with one of the highest nest densities in Texas. There has been a long history of mourning dove research on the TAMU Campus, with initial population studies conducted in the 1950?s, and the most recent studies occurring in the 1980?s. The TAMU Campus and surrounding areas have experienced substantial changes associated with urbanization and expansion over the last 50 years, altering mourning dove habitat on and around campus. The objective of this study was to examine mourning dove nesting and production in an urban setting and determine how microhabitat and landscape features affect nest-site selection and nest success. Specifically, I (1) examined trends in mourning dove nesting density and nest success on the TAMU Campus, and (2) identified important microhabitat and landscape features associated with nest-site selection and nesting success. Mourning dove nests were located by systematically searching potential nest sites on a weekly basis from the late-March through mid-September. Nests were monitored until they either failed or successfully fledged at least 1 young. A total of 778 nests was located and monitored on campus. All nest locations were entered into ArcView GIS. An equal number of nests were randomly generated in ArcView and assigned to non-nest trees to evaluate habitat variables associated with nest-site selection for mourning doves. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the significance of microhabitat and landscape variables to nest-site selection and nest success. Comparisons with data collected in 1950, 1978, and 1979 showed relatively similar nesting densities, but a significant decrease in nest success over time. A comparison of microhabitat features between actual nest trees and random locations (non-nest trees) indicated increasing values of tree diameter at breast height and tree species were important predictors of mourning dove nest-site selection. Landscape features found important in dove nest-site selection were proximity to open fields, roads, and buildings. Proximity to roads and buildings also were significant predictors of nest success. Combining significant microhabitat and landscape variables for nest-site selection increased the predictability of the model indicating a possible hierarchical nest-site selection strategy.Item Seasonal fluctuations in urban roost use by Brazilian free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) in a highway overpass, San Angelo, TexasMartinez, Stephanie Gabriella; Ammerman, Loren K; Dowler, Robert C; Negovetich, Nicholas J; Cordell-McNulty, KristiI surveyed a large population of Tadarida brasiliensis roosting in a highway overpass in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas to determine roost use and seasonal patterns of occupancy. I compared occupancy patterns observed in 2014 to those observed when the site was last surveyed in 1995. Population counts and roost use were documented from February 2014 through February 2015. Bat populations ranged from 0 during some winter counts to an estimated high of 191,795 individuals in August. Rainfall affected roosting conditions. During times of precipitation, large numbers of bats temporarily vacated the roost, but they returned when conditions improved. I discovered that this roosting location for T. brasiliensis serves as a maternity roost during the summer. Compared to a previous study conducted on the same roost in 1995, there were similar trends in seasonal occupancy. I concluded that the colony at this roost fluctuates predictably year-round.Item Spatial Ecology of and Public Attitudes toward Monk Parakeets Nesting on Electric Utility Structures in Dallas and Tarrant Counties, Texas(2014-07-29) Reed, Janet ElaineMonk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) were introduced to the United States (US) where they established naturalized populations. They often build their bulky twig nests on electric utility structures, causing economic damage. From May 2010?February 2013, we examined the spatial ecology of and public attitudes toward monk parakeets nesting on electric utility structures in Dallas and Tarrant counties, Texas, US. As nest sites, monk parakeets selected electric switchyards and substations constructed with multiple flat surfaces and acute-angles, within small fenced areas, with large canopy trees and taller anthropogenic structures within 100 m. Multi-scale analysis of urban land use-land cover (LULC) suggested the surrounding landscape had little impact on nest-site selection. Monk parakeets used canopy LULC more often than pavement, grass, buildings, or water. They traveled farthest from their nests during winter. Flock sizes were highly variable, yet largest during nonbreeding season. They foraged on a broad range of native vegetation and exhibited a diverse diet of flowers, fruits, acorns, grass blades, wild dry seeds, leaf buds, insect larvae, and commercial bird seed. We evaluated sociological variables as predictors of opposition to managing monk parakeets nesting on electric utility structures. Most survey participants were affluent, well-educated, older Caucasians who were unknowledgeable about, inexperienced with, and unsure about the impacts of monk parakeets. They indicated least opposition to nest removal and structural modification. When opposing, they would most likely do so socially and through petitions. Participants were influenced by their desire for monk parakeets to feed at their bird feeders or nest in their yard, people and groups important to them, and their perceived ease of opposing. Our results suggest LULC manipulation and food-based strategies are not reasonable for controlling urban monk parakeets. We recommend an outreach program explaining monk parakeet biology and the impacts of their nesting habits. We suggest targeting affluent areas adjacent to electric structures with nests and the predictors driving participants? behaviors. To provoke least opposition, we advise nest removal and structural modification. We recommend electric companies conduct cost-benefit analyses exploring feasibility of modifying construction elements preferred by monk parakeets and redesigning new construction to reduce risk of future nesting on electric utility structures.Item The perceptions of novice and veteran teachers on the role of the principal in the retention of urban novice teachers(Texas A&M University, 2007-04-25) Sarpy-Simpson, Claudine L.The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of novice and veteran teachers regarding the role of the principal in retaining teachers in the profession. Also, the research investigated whether and to what extent there are differences in the perceptions of novice and veteran teachers on the role of the principal in teacher retention. Participants for the study were selected from 15 elementary schools in an urban school district in the Southwestern part of the United States. The study included 270 novice and veteran elementary teachers who completed a Likert Scale questionnaire consisting of 23 questions. The study revealed that novice and veteran teachers believe principals play a key role in the retention of novice teachers. Specifically, the study revealed that teachers want to know the expectation of principals and their evaluation of them as a novice. In addition, they expect principals to play a major role in providing professional development support for teaching strategies, classroom management, and they expect continuous collaboration and encouragement. The results of the study revealed that there was not a statistically significant difference in the perceptions of the novice and veteran teachers in regards to the role of the principal and teacher retention.
