I apply these techniques to an expressive 3D modelling process which is used to create building caricatures. This process minimizes the number of unimportant details and increases the recognizability of the buildings. Additionally, the building caricature process decreases the time spent modelling the buildings and reduces their overall file sizes. Among the numerous directions of improvement in networking technology, recent pursuit to do better flow control of network traffic has led to the emergence of several explicit-feedback congestion control methods. As a first step towards understanding these methods, we analyze the stability and transient performance of Rate Control Protocol (RCP).We find that RCP can become unstable in certain topologies and may exhibit very high buffering requirements at routers. To address these limitations, we propose a new controller called Proportional Integral Queue Independent RCP (PIQI-RCP), prove its stability under heterogeneous delay, and use simulations to show that the new method has significantly lower transient queue lengths, better transient dynamics, and tractable stability properties. As a second step in understanding explicit congestion control, we experimentally evaluate proposed methods such as XCP, JetMax, RCP, and PIQI-RCP using their Linux implementation developed by us. Our experiments show that these protocols are scalable with the increase in link capacity and round-trip propagation delay. In steady-state, they have low queuing delay and almost zero packet-loss rate. We confirm that XCP cannot achieve max-min fairness in certain topologies. We find that JetMax significantly drops link utilization in the presence of short flows with long flow and RCP requires large buffer size at bottleneck routers to prevent transient packet losses and is slower in convergence to steady-state as compared to other methods. We observe that PIQI-RCP performs better than RCP in most of the experiments.Item Explorative study of African Americans and internet dating(Texas A&M University, 2005-02-17) Spates, Kamesha SondranekThe online dating industry is estimated to be worth 1.5 billion dollars. The growing trends in technology have resulted in African Americans logging on to the Web at astonishing rates. Therefore, the goal of this research project is to evaluate dating orientated interaction in the context of virtual communities. The theoretical perspective of this thesis is that of the concept of trust, and I examine the role that trust has on dating oriented interaction in the context of virtual communities. This study utilizes both ethnographic qualitative research methods along with the survey research method to explore the topic of African Americans and their use of the Internet as a tool to find ?quality or compatible dates?. This study also provides an examination not only of dating patterns among African Americans via the Internet, but it also provides an examination of the role that technology plays in creating and mediating dating trends. An additional interest is to evaluate dating orientated interaction in the context of virtual communities.Item Law enforcement and social media(Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT), 2013) Lovel, James R.Item Texas white-tailed deer Internet harvest model(2009-05-15) Garrett, Jennifer NicoleWhite-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is an intensively managed game species throughout Texas and the United States. Modeling is a tool that has been used to evaluate various management practices and their potential impacts on wildlife populations; however, many existing models are complicated for the average land manager, require a significant amount of demographic data that may not be readily available, or require expensive software. I developed a white-tailed deer (WTD) harvest model, Texas Deer Manager (TDM), using STELLA? (High Performance Systems, Inc., Version 7.0.3) and NetSim Creator? (High Performance Systems, Inc. Version 2.0), that incorporates the field data that are currently collected and/or can be easily collected, and can be used by interested landowners and state biologists. Unlike other population models specific for WTD, my TDM simulation model has an easy-to-use interface and is available on-line via the Internet. Age classes in the model are represented as fawns (<12 months), yearlings (1-2 years), and adults (>2 years) for each sex. Harvest is controlled by the model user. Currently the parameters such as survival and fecundity rates are set for an average year in the Edwards Plateau Ecological Region of Texas; however, model users can adjust survival and fecundity based on the specifics of their land management area. The website also provides general information about WTD biology and management. I conducted an on-line survey (n = 29) to evaluate the perceived usefulness and satisfaction of the TDM and website. I found that overall participants found the TDM and website were useful with 59% responding they would ?probably? or ?definitely? use it as a tool to help them determine their harvest plans. There seems to be a strong interest and need for a tool like the TDM and website. It would be beneficial to continue to develop the website and make it applicable for all the regions in Texas. Also, since the TDM model is easily accessible via the Internet and simple to use, it could be incorporated as a tool to teach population dynamics in the classroom.
