Item Exploring spatial interactions(2012-05) Bruner, Ryan David; Olsen, Daniel M., 1963-; Lee, GloriaThe field of interaction design is constantly shifting with the introduction of new technologies that allow individuals the ability to interact with or act upon an environment, such as installations that use motion tracking as an input device, or allowing users to interact with an environment with their mobile device. This shift from the interaction with traditional computers (static machines) to machines that react to people and environments, requires designers to reevaluate how these new platforms can be effectively used to communicate information and have a lasting affect on participants. There is a great challenge in the articulation of new interaction models. Many people tend to hold on to more traditional or familiar methods of interacting with their devices, as these new methods of engagement require the learning of new metaphors for interaction. How do we construct systems that engage and motivate people to use unfamiliar systems? The work presented in this report is my attempt to answer this question by exploring emerging spatial interface technologies.Item Foregrounding accessibility for user experience design(2015-05) Sandhu, Amanjot Kaur; Lee, Gloria; Bias, RandolphI am interested in creating generative tools and techniques for designing accessible user experiences for end users. As a user experience designer, I am working on embracing the web accessibility standards and guidelines and including them from the beginning of the User Experience (UX) design process. My projects are directed at facilitating design students and professionals to understand two things: that the broad concept of web accessibility is important, and how they can embed web accessibility into the UX design process at a very early stage. To do this, I used different media (website, posters and videos etc.) to create awareness and educate designers in an interesting, simple and engaging way. In this report, I will discuss the definition and role of accessible design, identify limitations in existing tools and methods, and demonstrate how future designers might research, prototype, analyze, and implement their designs for all users.Item Making sense with design : a taxonomy of designed experiences(2006) Poggio, Natacha Lorena; Lee, GloriaSo automatically do we perceive things through sight, sound, smell, and touch that we easily can take our senses for granted. My design research strives to deepen the understanding of our senses by creating innovative experiences that make us react in new ways, even to the most common experiences. My aspiration is that the resulting experiences will re-shape our memory and perception of the world. This report is a documentation of my inquiry into the design of human experience; where I look beyond applied products and broaden my view to include all sorts of objects and environments with which people interact. Serving as a guidebook, it outlines the different disciplines of design that address the design of experiences. Additionally, selected case studies from the body of work I have pursued during my graduate studies are presented as a collection of stories of my experience designing user experiences. My design philosophy embodies the importance of engaging multiple senses in each designed activity to better enhance the overall quality of the experience for everyone, including people with disabilities.
