Item Reliability and validity of the trauma symptom checklist for young children - Spanish version(2011-05) Hunsaker, Stephen F.; Wherry, Jeffrey N.; Trejos-Castillo, Elizabeth; Reifman, AlanThere are currently few standardized instruments for children which measure symptoms consistent with child abuse and PTSD. With national child abuse reports confirming that minority children are at greater risk of child abuse than their non-minority counterpart, studies involving translated measures are necessary to address the problem. The current study evaluates the reliability and convergent validity of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children – Spanish version (TSCYC-SP), a caretaker reporting tool which specifically assesses symptoms of PTSD in children age 3 to 12. While past studies show support for this measures reliability, convergent validity has not been previously assessed. Utilizing a community clinical sample from a West Texas city, 85 Spanish-speaking Mexican American parents/guardians with children aged 6 to 12 completed both the TSCYC-SP and the CBCL-SP. To assess convergent validity, participants completed both the TSCYC-SP and the Child Behavior Checklist Spanish version (CBCL-SP). Reliabilities of the subscales of the TSCYC-SP were assessed using Chronbach’s alphas and the convergent validity was examined by calculating correlation coefficients between the subscales of the TSCYC-SP and the subscales of the CBCL-SP. Results indicate that the TSCYC-SP is a reliable and valid measure to assess symptoms consistent with child trauma and abuse in Mexican American children.
