Auto X is a short fiction film about the ramblings, arguments, and strange encounters in a day in the life of a south-side Austin auto body & tint shop. It was devised and developed through improvisation and collaboration between its four-person cast and the director. Incorporating both elements of realism, character-driven fiction, and documentary, Auto X utilizes an unconventional approach to narrative filmmaking to present a unique and textured world of characters. The report recounts the production process in a day-by-day first-person narrative. The production account is preceded by a description of the initial planning and conceptualization of the project. In the latter half, the post-production process is presented as well as final conclusions drawn from the entire life of the project. Particular attention is paid to key filmmaking concepts and stylistic approaches that are discussed alongside the stages of production they pertain to.Item Ex-votos : reality and fiction in a Mexican short film(2012-12) Guerra Lucas, Ivete Raquel; Raval, P. (Paul James); Shea, Andrew; Pierson, John; Harrigan, StephenThe following report describes the pre-production, production, and post-production stages of the short film NIGHT OUT, a film set in the present day in Montreal, Quebec. The story follows a high school kid throughout one evening out on the town. Over the course of the night he meets an older man, Julian, who takes him to a bar where he meets an older woman, Patricia. NIGHT OUT explores the loneliness in urban landscapes, a young person’s relationship with strangers, and the risks and rewards of opening yourself to the world. The majority of this report consists of a first-person account of the entire process of making this project, from its inception to its completion. Supplemental materials include: character descriptions and synopsis, shot list, lined script, storyboards, and a props and costume list.Item Plus/minus(2014-05) Irvine, Andrew Robert; Howard, Donald WayneThe report details the development, pre-production, production, and post-production stages of Plus/Minus. Plus/Minus is a short, narrative film about about a young couple examining their relationship as they await the result of a pregnancy test.Item Tiny tape recorder(2012-12) Hanninen, Paavo Vilho, III; Raval, P. (Paul James); Spiro, Ellen; Ramirez-Berg, CharlesThe following report details the creation of my thesis film, Tiny Tape Recorder, from the genesis of the original idea through writing, pre-production, production and post-production. Tiny Tape Recorder is a short narrative fiction film about a man who discovers a tape recorder embedded in his head and the physical and emotional pain he must endure as the tape recorder malfunctions and replays his past. This science-fiction project attempts to balance the absurdist nature of this premise with a naturalistic treatment of the material in a desire to keep the focus of the film on the characters. This report seeks to serve as both a documentary representation of the process of creating Tiny Tape Recorder as well as an attempt to reveal and decode the intentions and motivations behind the use of that process.Item Uncanny valley(2013-12) Murthy, Roshan T.; Shea, Andrew BrendanThe following report describes the pre-production, production, and post-production stages of the short film UNCANNY VALLEY, a film about a person trying to digitally resurrect his deceased mother. After his mother passes away from cancer, Anish finds a place where he can input data in order to breathe life into expired things. UNCANNY VALLEY touches on the subject of the proliferation of personal data and how it might be used to reconstruct an incomplete portrait of a given period of time. This report recounts the experience of producing the film as well as insights into the writing process and the pre-production process. Supplemental materials include a final draft of the script and storyboards.Item We will always be here(2013-12) Walton, Monique; Schiesari, NancyThis report serves as a first-person account of the conceptualization, pre-production, and post-production phases of my short documentary thesis film. We Will Always Be Here interweaves stories from residents, historians, and grassroots activists in a visual essay about the transforming landscape in the rapidly expanding neighborhood of East Austin. The film explores themes of identity politics and cultural resistance amid the seemingly unstoppable expansion of the city of Austin.
