Item Fostering active learning through the use of feedback technologies and collaborative activities in a postsecondary setting(2010-05) Guerrero, Camilo; Robinson, Daniel H.; Borich, Gary D.; Katayama, Andrew D.; Svinicki, Marilla D.; Vaughn, Brandon K.Technology is enjoying an increasingly important role in many collegiate pedagogical designs. Contemporary research has become more focused on the ways that technology can contribute to learning outcomes. These studies provide a critical foundation for educational researchers who seek to incorporate and reap the benefits of new technologies in classroom environments. The aim of the present study is to empirically assess how combining an active, collaborative learning environment with a classroom response system (colloquially called “clickers”) in a postsecondary setting can influence and improve learning outcomes. To this end, the study proposes an instructional design utilizing two feedback response-formats (clickers and flashcards) and two response methods for answering in-class questions (collaborative peer instruction and individual). The theoretical bases that provide the academic structure for the five instructional conditions (control, clicker-response individual, clicker-response peer instruction, flashcard-response individual, and flashcard-response peer instruction) are the generative learning theory and social constructivism. Participants were 171 undergraduate students from an Educational Psychology subject pool from a large Southwest university. The researcher used a two-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with two treatments (response format and collaboration level) as the between-subjects factors; students’ posttest scores as the dependent variable; and pretest scores as the covariate. Results showed no significant main effects; however, the study produced statistically significant findings that there was an interaction effect between the use of clickers and a peer instruction design. To follow up the interaction, the researcher conducted tests of the simple effects of response format within each collaboration condition, with the pretest as the covariate. Results showed that for students who collaborated, clickers were better than flashcards, whereas when students worked individually, there was no difference. This study builds upon existing studies by using a stronger empirical approach with more robust controls to evaluate the effects of a variety of instructional interventions, clicker and flashcard response systems and peer instruction on learning outcomes. It shows that clicker technology might be most effective when combined with collaborative methods. The discussion includes implications, limitations, and directions for future research.Item Multimedia-enhanced developmental mathematics for postsecondary culturally diverse students(2015-12) Belfi, Marcie Merinda; Bryant, Diane Pedrotty; Bryant, Brian R; Sorrells, Audrey M; Powell, Sarah R; Liu, MinStudents who are not ready for college must take developmental courses, predominately in math more than reading or writing, because of the need to pass high school algebra as a prerequisite to gain entrance to college. Students who take developmental courses are predominately from minority ethnic backgrounds or from low- income families. These students often have documented learning disabilities (LD) or have been overlooked by the education system. The use of multimedia in the classroom can offer these students various methods for learning, as well as individualized instruction. The present study compares a multimedia-enhanced (MME) developmental mathematics course that has a mandatory attendance requirement to a course that teaches the same curriculum in a lecture-based format. A mixed-methods comparative analysis pretest posttest quasi-experimental design was used to compare student performance on a posttest and final exam between students taught in the MME section and students taught in the lecture-based section. A course survey was conducted to compare student satisfaction between the two conditions. Interviews were conducted to gather students’ perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to learning in both conditions, as well as to determine students’ past experiences with mathematics learning and their dispositions towards mathematics learning in general. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in student performance on the posttest and final exam between the students taught in the MME section and the students taught in the lecture-based section. There was no statistically significant difference in student satisfaction between the two sections. The barriers included the short amount of time for the summer course and lack of technology skills. The facilitators included: (a) helpful instructor, (b) supplementary videos provided by faculty member, (c) collaboration with peers, (d) examples in the software showing how to work the problems, (e) step-by-step instructions, (f) portability of the course, (g) ability to print from the lab, (h) working in the lab, (i) working at own pace, (j) access to the textbook online, and (k) opportunities for practice. These results are discussed in further detail and implications for practice and further research are also considered.Item A video self-modeling intervention for postsecondary students with autism spectrum disorders(2013-05) Pierce, Nigel Paree; Falcomata, Terry S.Colleges and universities are experiencing increased enrollment of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These students often demonstrate difficulties in social situations, such as interacting with peers or understanding social cues. As a result, students diagnosed with ASD can seem socially awkward and engage in inappropriate behaviors in social contexts. Currently, there are few studies that examine social skills interventions for college students diagnosed with ASD. A well-established intervention for addressing social skill development is video-self modeling (VSM). Until now, VSM research has focused on primary and secondary students, without investigating this intervention's effects on the social skills of individuals in the postsecondary setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VSM on social skills for individuals diagnosed with ASD in postsecondary settings. In this study, we examined the effects of VSM on social skills (i.e., social initiations, eye contact, and pausing) using a multiple baseline design across therapists and a multiple baseline design across participants with generalization probes. Results demonstrated high levels of response to VSM for three participants compared to baseline conditions, and moderate response for the fourth participant.
