Item The structure of knowledge of clinical laboratory science(Texas Tech University, 1996-12) Leach, Donna L.The author developed and validated the Leach Model of the Structure of Knowledge for Clinical Laboratory Science and the Leach Registry of Essential Knowledge Elements for Clinical Laboratory Science to keep clinical laboratory scientists at the forefront of allied health practitioners. The mode of inquiry utilized for this study was epistecybemetics. Knowledge content areas, professional functions, and dominant technologies of clinical laboratory science were determined through analysis. A functional classification system was developed that listed each knowledge content area, professional function, and dominant technology and showed their interrelationships. The author developed a registry of essential knowledge elements using the model and a functionally structured knowledge classification system as the format. The author used books, journal articles, and manufacturers' product information to extract essential knowledge elements for each knowledge content area. The Leach Model and the Leach Registry were validated by twenty-three clinical laboratory educators who were asked sixty-five questions concerning the validity, comprehensiveness, and usefulness of the two products. The educators were asked to rate the products and encouraged to provide comments concerning the model and each knowledge content area of the registry. Once the rating documents were reviewed and returned to the author, the ratings were compiled and analyzed. Means and confidence intervals were calculated for each hypothesis. The author used qualitative comments to modify the model and the registry resulting in validated products. Results of the statistical tests indicated that the educators perceived the Leach Model and Leach Registry to be valid, comprehensive, and usefiil. This study found that experts can validate a structure of knowledge model for clinical laboratory science and can determine those elements that are essential for professional preparation and practice.
