Item Aerial acrobatics(2008-12) Badgett, Karol Ann; Grantham, Donald, 1947-Aerial Acrobatics is a musical composition for full orchestra consisting of three movements entitled: "Spinning," "Arabesques," and "Scherzo for Trapeze." The material is derived from the composer's experience as a dance accompanist and has been developed into a musical work intended to evoke images of dance movement in many genres including modern dance, ballet, and acrobatics. Aerial Acrobatics is intended for concert performance but suggests to the audience imaginary choreography involving a circus of performing artists vying for the center ring.Item The Man of God for orchestra: a descriptive analysis(2003) Oh, Seil; Grantham, Donald, 1947-“The Man of God,” based on the biblical story of David, is an orchestral piece in one movement. The composition is scored for a standard large symphony orchestra, and is approximately fifteen minutes in duration. This is my first attempt to compose a programmatic piece in the Romantic aesthetic. I did not try to describe every detailed event, even though the music follows the basic story line. David’s story is the basic source of this composition, but it is expressed in abstract musical language. The analysis portion of this dissertation discusses the composition’s main themes, pitch organization, harmonic and rhythmic materials, and its formal structure.Item Moriah: for orchestra(2003) Hwang, Dong-Ok; Grantham, DonaldMORIAH is a work for full orchestra inspired by Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. The general program for the work is based on events told in the Bible. Four themes, representing Abraham, Isaac, God and Jesus, are the main sources of musical material in the work. These four themes are related so as to represent the Father-Son relationship, both spiritual and physical, found between God-Jesus, God-Abraham, God-Isaac, and Abraham-Isaac. In the music, these relationships are also reflected through a constant process of juxtaposing and interweaving of musical material. The analysis portion of the dissertation will focus on the themes, and their interrelationship, with respect to pitch and rhythmic materials, formal, textural and orchestrational relationships.Item Prophecies(2007) Kolm, Jonathan David; Welcher, DanItem Prophecies(2007-05) Kolm, Jonathan David, 1977-; Welcher, DanItem Silvered dreams(2003-05) McInturff, Marian Rachel, 1962-; Pinkston, Russell“Silvered Dreams” is a thirteen-minute composition for small orchestra, including a synthesizer. It is structured as a series of impressionistic episodes that alternate between the amorphous and atmospheric to the more tuneful and tonally structured. These episodes, ranging in length from five to thirty-seven measures, are composed around Episode 8, the longest section. This episode serves as the focal point of the composition where the more tonally structured tunes are finally allowed to predominate, without interruption from the previous atmospheric, less tonally structured material. Episode 9 ends the work suggesting a return to the material of the impressionistic opening and is structured so as to dissipate Episode 8’s culminating energy.Item Three movements for jazz orchestra based on the Cuban rumba(2002-12) De Castro, Paul Jose; Hellmer, Jeffrey L.Item Three movements for jazz orchestra based on the Cuban rumba(2002) De Castro, Paul Jose; Hellmer, Jeffrey L.
