Item Architectural manoeuvres in the dark(Texas Tech University, 1990-05) Taylor, J. KirkThe intent of this thesis is to examine how a design can be derived from creating space and form simultaneous with a purposeful light to reveal them. Although a great deal can be done to manipulate natural light to work towards the ends of the architect, artificial light affords the greatest control in exploring how the design of light can be used to reveal the physical character of a place to accomplish a design intention. Therefore, artificial illumination will be the exclusive means for revealing the physical design in the project. The project chosen for this study is a nightclub, for a quite obvious reason. A nightclub is experienced entirely at night, making artificial illumination the only means to reveal the physical design. Also, the environment appropriate for a nightclub, an escape from the everyday into another world, provides a rich opportunity for which the design and illumination of the space can work.Item Illumination in the grave(Texas Tech University, 1990-05) Hagmann, Gregory George; Lehamann, G.Therefore, it is my intent to explore the realm of architecture as "art;" as communicating that which is meaningful, that which is affective, and that which is poetic. Thus, the thesis will be an attempt to manifest an architecture of sublime presence, through the qualities of light and shadow that will characterize such a spatial expression as meaningful. This expression is to be an embodiment of ideas through which a Christian understanding of Death is communicated. Therefore, the architectural design will be a Cenotaph and Necropolis to the Corpus Christi, "the Body of Christ."
