Item Impact modeling and failure modes of composite plywood(2010-12) Otkur, Melisa; Ertas, Atila; Maxwell, Timothy T.; Ekwaro-Osire, StephenA computational model of composite plywood subjected to various velocity impacts is developed to characterize the failure behaviors. The composite failure model is analyzed with the LS-DYNA finite element software. The results of the simulation are compared to the results from experiments performed by the Texas Tech University Wind Science and Engineering Research Center. In the case of the composite wall, the impact-induced damage of matrix cracking, delimination, and fiber breakage is found and explained. The importance of the moisture content of wood is examined by developing simulations with 1%, 10%, 20%, and 30% moisture content. The results show that the impact response of the structure is proportional to the impact velocity. From the results, LS-DYNA is found to be suitable in constructing and solving an FE model of composite plywood.
