Item Frans Krajcberg: art in defense of the forest(Texas Tech University, 1999-05) Walters, Roberta LaneseThis dissertation, the most comprehensive study of Frans Krajcberg undertaken in the US, has several purposes. First, it introduces a highly-acclaimed living Brazilian artist about whom very little is published in English or accessible in the United States. Secondly, it investigates the artist in the context of his environmental aesthetic, not purporting to be a discussion of contemporary Latin American environmental art theory or discourse, but rather drawing on these to explore the subject of Krajcberg as an environmental artist. Third, it assesses the influence of his artistic production and his environmental activism on public attitudes, investigating his stature, relevance, success, and influence—mainly in the Brazilian art world. Lastly, it evaluates him in his self-proclaimed role of social/environmental critic.
