Item Dissociation and pain perception : an experimental investigation(2006-05) Horowitz, Jonathan David; Telch, Michael JosephDissociative symptoms and abnormalities in pain perception have been associated with a range of disorders. We tested whether experimentally induced increases in state dissociation would cause an analgesic response, and whether this effect would be moderated by participants' history of trauma and dissociative experiences. Participants (n=120) were classified based on their histories of traumatic and dissociative experiences: No trauma or dissociation (NN), trauma without dissociation (TN), or trauma with dissociation (TD). All participants were randomized to a dissociation induction condition via audiophotic stimulation or a credible control condition and were compared on prepost changes in subjective pain and pain tolerance in response to a standard cold-pressor test. Unexpectedly, dissociation induction did not lead to greater pain tolerance or reduced self-reported pain. However, increases in state dissociation significantly predicted increased immersion time and decreased subjective pain.Item The effects of alignment on the dissociation of H₂ on Pd(111)(2002-05) Isakson, Marcia Joyce; Sitz, Greg OrmanThe effects of rotational alignment in surface scattering phenomena are studied. Alignment means a spatial preference for the plane of rotation. Specifically, changes in the reflection probability for H2 reaction with Pd(111) were studied for different molecular rotational alignments (helicopters vs. cartwheelers) and different incident translational energies. Experimentally, molecules were prepared with well-defined, non-statistical alignments using a linearly polarized laser before interaction with the surface. After scattering, the molecules were probed with another laser to determine their internal state. We found that the reflectivity of helicopter molecules was less than that of cartwheeler molecules. This effect increased with increasing incident energy. The result is interpreted as meaning that helicopters are more likely to dissociate than to scatter. The results are further evidence of steric forces in the H2/Pd interaction.Item The kinetics of endothermic solid state decompositions(Texas Tech University, 1970-12) Sveum, Larry KNot availableItem The thermal dissociation of some cobalt (III) ammine complexes(Texas Tech University, 1967-06) Woodlock, John HughNot availableItem The thermal dissociation of some coordination complexes(Texas Tech University, 1966-05) Smith, James Patrick,Not availableItem The thermal dissociation of some pentammine and hexamminechromium (III) complexes(Texas Tech University, 1963-06) Joe, Chak YanNot availableItem The vibrational dynamics of 3D HOCl above dissociation(2015-08) Lin, Yi-Der; Reichl, Linda E.; Bohm, Arno; Sitz, Greg O.; Stanton, John F.; Morrison, Philip J.We have analyzed the vibrational dynamics of HOCl above dissociation using a 3D energy surface which governs the vibrational dynamics of HOCl above dissociation. The dynamics is dominated by an invariant manifold which is trasversally unstable for small spacing between Cl and HO complex, and stable for large spacing. Above dissociation, the InM separates two mirror image periodic orbits, embedded in a large chaotic sea, that can hold a large number of quantum states. The periodic orbits have the capability of forming significant quasibound states of the molecule above dissociation.
