Abstract

Concertino for Alto Saxophone with Oboe, Horn in F, and Piano, a three-movement small-form concerto, provides performers with an opportunity to present music with atonal melodic and harmonic concepts composed in a method that is quite tonal. It is written with the intention of presenting atonality in such a way that it is "pleasing to the ears." Through the use of fragmentation, repetition, and motivic expansion, atonal concepts in this work develop in much the same way as melodies of the Common Practice period. Through the juxtaposition with and the interjection of tonal textures, Concertino advances a forced bond between tonality and atonality.
