Abstract

With the constant increase in wages and the decrease in working hours, man is seeking more and more to find things to fill his spare time. The search is toward recreation, as leisure has always been the dream of man. Provisions for the increasing recreational demands has fallen far behind the population increase. Inland recreation facilities are especially lacking. The great plains, a vast area of population, has almost no provisions for outdoor recreation. Workmen wish to enjoy their leisure time while also being with their families; therefore they are looking for recreation that will be inviting to all age groups. Family recreation is possibly the best solution to the juvenile delinquency problem. Commercialization of recreation today has caused the loss of freedom in leisure and turned it into a status symbol. Freedom in recreation may stem from an impulse, and the desire to cross the bar ditch and drive in the pasture can be satisfied on water. The purpose of the proposed marina is to fill a small space in the need for recreational facilities, and to stimulate a return to the basic appreciation of nature and the freedom implied by it. "Before the automobile could become a practical possession, someone had to invest the service station."1 The boating industry is striving for the same goal in the marina.
