Abstract
In pursuit of reform for mathematics education, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) produced three Standards documents; Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989), Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991), and Assessment Standards for School Mathematics (1995). These documents were written in an effort to insure quality education for students of mathematics, as a means to communicate mathematical goals, and as a vehicle for promoting change in current mathematical practices. As the first nationally recommended set of standards for mathematical curriculum content, these standards were prepared to address the nation's desire for a deeper understanding of mathematics by all students.
