Abstract

This thesis is a study of the Harvey Girls, from their conception in 1883 to their demise after World War II, and their ability to "civilize" the West. This study begins by examining the rise of Fred Harvey and his Harvey Houses yet it moves to the comtemporary revitalization of the Harvey Houses. Ultimately this research pays particular attention to the Harvey Girl's work experiences and how the Harvey Company relied on their image to not only bring Victorian culture to the west, but attempt to resurrect the company in the face of post-WW II era cahnges in consumption and travel.
