Abstract

Tool life studies play a vital role in determining the economics of a metal cutting operation. These studies are designed to assess the ability of particular tools to withstand the high temperatures and pressures encountered when operating under given workpiece machining conditions. Since the life of a cutting tool is limited primarily by wear (1), the amount of wear a tool can tolerate before it reaches the end of its useful life is one of the major indices used to assess tool performance.

Wear takes place in a metal cutting operation at the tool - workpiece interface (flank wear), the tool-chip interface (crater wear), or in both areas. The manner in which the cutting conditions affect these types of wear directly influences the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of the workpiece, and, consequently, the overall economics of the machining operation.
