Abstract

The question "By what means does the Native speak" is one that calls for a careful examination of Native-American narrative forms, for the historical treatment of Native Americans has affected both colonizer and colonized voices in American literature. The assessment of the "Native" voice in Hillerman's fiction, then, must set the Navajo-detective novels into the context of the historical and post-colonial literary canons, identify genre, and, most importantly, delineate the basic tenets of Navajo spirituality and evaluate Hillerman's use of those spiritual tenets.
