Abstract

This thesis compares Byrd’s English anthems and Latin motets in the context of the English Reformation. This comparison focuses on methods of text painting used in each genre and explores how mandates for a syllabic and homophonic compositional style in the Church of England affect Byrd’s overall compositional style.
