Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the purchasing practices and policies of a selected sample of Lubbock's manufacturers with generally accepted purchasing standards. In order to accomplish this purpose, it was necessary to undertake a threefold objective: (1) to carefully examine secondary sources such as books, periodicals, and other written material concerning the principles involved in correct purchasing practices and to summarize the policies, procedures, and principles which most authors advocate as highly desirable, if not completely essential, to an efficient purchasing department, (2) to secure information concerning the purchasing policies, procedures, and practices of a selected number of manufacturing firms located in Lubbock, Texas, by developing a questionnaire based on the information derived from the survey described above and presenting it to the purchasing agents of the selected firms, and (3) to compare the data acquired through the primary research described in step two with the information obtained from the secondary sources in step one in order to ascertain whether any discrepancies exist between the actual practices which are prevalent among the firms in Lubbock and the purchasing "ideals" advocated by the secondary sources.
