Abstract

Music notated in different shapes instead of traditional round note developed in Colonial singing schools in New England. While these traditions died out in New England they traveled with the expansion of the United States into the South and West. The Primitive Baptist denomination in West Texas continue sing from hymnals printed in shape-notes and teach their hymns to their younger generation at Harmony Plains Singing School.
