Abstract

This thesis investigates the performance of a variable capacitive transducer. This transducer can be used to measure small angular movements, with good accuracy and resolution. An electrical equivalent circuit of the transducer is developed, and the transducer behavior is simulated. Simulation results are compared with experimental results. Possible causes for any disparity in the results are discussed. The electronic interface to die transducer is detailed. The repeatability and resolution of the transducer are determined. Further research that needs to be done, to fully understand the nonlinear behavior and to improve the performance of the transducer, is outlined. Finally, important issues in miniaturizing this transducer are addressed.
