Discovering, Documenting, and Highlighting Collections of Texas Digital Library Member Institutions

As a capstone to complete my master’s degree, I am undertaking a project with the Texas Digital Library (TDL) to better document and highlight the digital collections of TDL’s member institutions. As a consortium of Texas higher education institutions, TDL consists of 22 member institutions from every region of Texas including public and private universities of various sizes and academic medical centers. While TDL hosts member institutions’ digital repositories through DSpace, there has not been a comprehensive survey of member institutions’ digital collections. With this project, I will create a report that identifies collecting strengths across these institutions using information gathered by surveying the public-facing repositories of TDL member institutions and interviewing repository managers about their digital collections. Then I will use the information in the report as a resource to highlight some of those collecting areas through a social media campaign and digital exhibit. Engagement through these online platforms will work to bring public awareness to Texas digital collections especially those of smaller institutions or that document underrepresented communities, and the report could be used to inform future projects as well.
