Abstract

MORIAH is a work for full orchestra inspired by Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. The general program for the work is based on events told in the Bible. Four themes, representing Abraham, Isaac, God and Jesus, are the main sources of musical material in the work. These four themes are related so as to represent the Father-Son relationship, both spiritual and physical, found between God-Jesus, God-Abraham, God-Isaac, and Abraham-Isaac. In the music, these relationships are also reflected through a constant process of juxtaposing and interweaving of musical material. The analysis portion of the dissertation will focus on the themes, and their interrelationship, with respect to pitch and rhythmic materials, formal, textural and orchestrational relationships.
