Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to examine the presence of power and evil in the 21st century Mexican narrative with regard to drug trafficking. To this effect, this investigation focuses on Juan Pablo Villalobos’ novel Fiesta en la madriguera (2010) to propose that in its narrative world, mediated by the activity of drug trafficking, a constant dualism of the ubiquity of power and banality of evil is exhibited. In this way, fiction about drug trafficking presents an image of social reality that distances itself from the basic moral principles of human society. The concept of ubiquity of power follows the ideas of Michel Foucault regarding power understood as the multiplicity of relationships of force, attempting the domination of one over another and that exist in multiple aspects of society. The concept of the banality of evil is derived from the premises of Hannah Arendt, in the sense that the expressions of evil occur in everyday forms of social life and among individuals that act without reflecting on the consequences of their actions. In following the development of power and evil, this study utilizes a cultural approach to emphasize the dialogue that the literary production maintains with the sociocultural reality.
